Expositions where you can become a scientist yourself are presenting Mendel´s life and work and relationship to today´s genetics, molecular biology and other branches.
Address
Mendelianum, Muzejní 1, Brno – centre (entrance from Zelný trh/Cabbage market or Kapucínské náměstí/Capuchin Square)
History
Construction of the Visitor Centre Mendelianum – Attractive World of Genetics was initiated in 2012 when Mendelianum celebrated 50 years since its establishment within the Moravian Museum. Today´s Moravian Museum has a direct continuity with the museum established in 1817 by the Agriculture Society (Ackerbaugesellschaft), the scientific Society where Mendel work 40 years and gathered inspiration for his research. The Moravian Museum has thus been the only institution with research programme directly linked with Mendel´s scientific society.
Genius loci
By 2000, Mendelianum was located in the building of the Augustinian Monastery in Old Brno. In frame of its new concept of the 3rd millennium which presents Mendel as a multifaceted personality and particular an outstanding scientist, Mendelianum has moved to the authentic premises of Mendel´s scientific Society. Recent expositions are thus located directly in the rooms where Mendel used to attend and meet his colleagues. There has been preserved is even the original ceiling in the meeting hall where you will be welcome by Mendel seated at the table.
